  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from jimsstones -- Written by 17 year old prodigy elementary classical physics. : I always thought general relativity covariant derivative of a tensor, curvature tensor, etc was really advanced mathematics. But now I guess this is elementary classical physics. Book is written by 17 year old prodigy. The really advanced physics is quantum field theory of which I have only the foggiest idea the most elementary relatavistic quantum mechanics. I will have to figure out which book to buy on quantum field theory on Kindle, no good books on Kindle Unlimited. As though I might be capable of understanding it. Ex bright young man physics graduate student now senile 72 year old decrepit geezer. It is nice to review elementary relativity book. I first studied this over 50 years ago. Importantly, the world line of a particle free from all external, non-gravitational forces is a particular type of geodesic. In other words, a freely moving or falling particle always moves along a geodesic. This summer semester (2021) I am giving a course on General Relativity (GR). This course is intended for theorists with familiarity with special relativity... Since general relativity portrays gravity not as a (Newtonian) force but as the curvature of spacetime, geodesics are the trajectories Geodesics in general are what you get when you try to move straight on a curved space. However, not all of general relativity follows from such simple considerations. The wonderful surprise awaiting us is that the matrix hµν is, at heart, a geometrical object: it describes the curvature of spacetime. This book is the first volume out of a 2-volume book series on General Relativity (GR), and offers a detailed introduction into the mathematics of GR, special relativity and the equivalence principle. It teaches these concepts by charting a student's progress through GR, who constantly stumbles and... Like we defined inertial frames in special relativity, there is a need to define these for general curved spacetime too.
