• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tino -- Classic struggle between young people and the human and natural forces arrayed against them : This book is a classic and was read by almost all high-school age children in Italy for many years. It is very long, with many twists and turns. It is an adventure featuring two young people as they strive to be married, but are thwarted at various turns by bullies and situations. The author, Alessandro Manzoni, was famous and highly honored for his works, this being the primary one. Reading the book carefully develops one's Italian vocabulary, as the author does not write "down;" in fact, he uses highly descriptive words and phrases, some of which are quite obscure. Although the style of writing has mutated in modern Italian, the development of the plot and the personalities sets a standard that is rarely, if ever, exceeded today. The book also gives a sense of history, in that the events took place in the 17th century. Most of the population was very poor, with a few wealthy families at the top of the pyramid. The principal protagonists had to contend with their own poverty and powerlessness, in their struggle against the nobility and the terrible scourges of famine and plagues that raged through Italy and the entire world. We do the exercises. and we wrote a modern version of the love story. The illustrations are excellent. I am enjoying this book very much.. You can also see a video of the story. La celeberrima storia di Renzo e Lucia rappresenta ancora oggi certi aspetti della vita quotidiana con i soprusi che dobbiamo ancora oggi subire. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from arkady22 -- pessima edizione kindle : Questa è una recensione non tanto del romanzo di Manzoni, quanto dell'edizione kindle BUR "Romanzi d'Italia". Prima però due parole sull'edizione cartacea: gli apparati consistono di una prefazione di Andrea Riccardi, di una cronologia della vita di Manzoni e di una breve bibliografia. Il testo è corredato di un sobrio apparato di note, che spiegano soprattutto termini desueti, modi di dire di non immediata comprensione, e nomi storici o geografici. Si tratta di un approccio a mio avviso del tutto condivisibile: spesso le edizioni dei classici italiani hanno introduzioni di decine e decine di pagine e imponenti masse di note al testo. Intendiamoci, introduzioni e note sono assolutamente necessarie per comprendere, se non altro dal punto di vista linguistico, i classici, ma questi apparati spesso finiscono col soverchiare il testo vero e proprio; anzi si può dire che gli apparati critici diventano il vero testo del libro, e l'opera che commentano ne è quasi un'appendice. Ciò può essere comprensibile nel caso di edizioni rivolte a un pubblico di studenti (o studiosi), ma va meno bene per il comune lettore che voglia innnazitutto leggere i testi classici della nostra letteratura. Questa edizione dei Promessi Sposi è perfetta per chi desidera innanzitutto rileggersi il romanzo: prefazione e note sono di effettivo aiuto, senza essere invadenti. Se poi verrà voglia di approfondire l'argomento, ci si potrà rivolgere a edizioni con apparati critici più approfonditi. ( Reviewed in Italy on December 29, 2012 )
